Palais de Tokyo Fall 2024 Exhibitions

Palais de Tokyo’s 2024 Fall season of exhibition “Generous Ghosts” was among the densest seasons we have ever had in Paris. A total of 8 exhibitions unveiled a multitude of visions and of voices that approached the present by way of allies in the past, convoking and invoking enduring ancestral bonds and benevolent ghosts, and making visible absent yet powerful figures. So many invitations to widen our gaze and sharpen it at the same time. So many invitations to see differently, further, deeper, and more intensely, through the sensitive, the evanescent, and even through the invisible.

MALALA ANDRIALAVIDRAZANA “FIGURES”

The Palais de Tokyo's grande verrière gallery played host to Malala Andrialavidrazana’s first solo exhibition in a Parisian public institution, transforming her digital photomontages, created since 2015, into an architectural-scale display. This retrospective included new works and showcased her Figures series, which overlay images from stamps, banknotes, and other sources, resembling geographical maps. Through these layered collages, Andrialavidrazana explored the clash of histories, knowledge, and power, prompting viewers to ask, “Who is speaking?” and “Where are they speaking from?”

JULIAN CHARRIÈRE “STONE SPEAKERS”

Stone Speakers by Julian Charrière transformed the exhibition space into an immersive volcanic landscape of mineral sculptures and sound, where visitors heard the earth's primordial sounds through a multidimensional system. Using recordings from volcanoes across Colombia, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iceland, and Sicily, Charrière portrayed the planet as dynamic and alive. This "parliament of volcanoes" captured the motion of magma, tides, and tectonic plates, creating an echo chamber that amplified their resonant dialogues. A live seismic data feed connected the gallery with the unseen activity of the earth’s depths.

BARBARA CHASE-RIBOUD “EVERYTIME A KNOT IS UNDONE A GOD IS RELEASED”

With this exhibition, the Palais de Tokyo joined a collective, nationwide celebration of Barbara Chase-Riboud’s oeuvre that has been devised in conversation with Donatien Grau and Erin Gilbert, in collaboration with seven other Parisian institutions: the Centre Pompidou, the Musée National des arts Asiatiques – Guimet, the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, the Palais de la Porte Dorée, the Cité de la Musique, and the Philharmonie de Paris. Barbara Chase-Riboud’s exhibition “Quand un nœud est dénoué, un dieu est libéré” at the Palais de Tokyo highlighted her diverse artistic legacy as a sculptor, poet, and novelist, who is celebrated in the U.S. but lesser-known in France, her home since 1961

“TITUBA, WHO PROTECTS US?”

The exhibition Tituba, who to protects us? brought together eleven artists from France, the UK, and North America with African and Caribbean diasporic roots to explore themes of grief, memory, migration, and ancestral ties. Inspired by Maryse Condé’s novel Tituba, Black Witch of Salem, the show presented black women's narratives, touching on personal and collective histories and featuring diverse media like sculpture, film, and photography. Tituba serves as a symbolic protector, and the exhibition honoured her as a spiritual figure, weaving together artistic and literary expressions to connect the visible and the unseen.
