Vienna: Martha Jungwirth

A prominent figure in the Austrian avant-garde scene, Martha Jungwirth has carved a distinctive niche with her expressive and gestural approach to painting. Her work, which often explores the interplay of color, form, and emotion, reflects a dynamic engagement with abstract expressionism. Jungwirth's artistic journey is marked by a commitment to experimentation, and her evolving style has showcased a remarkable range over the years.

Recognized for her powerful use of color and the visceral energy embedded in her brushstrokes, Martha Jungwirth's art has garnered both national and international acclaim. Thaddeus Ropac Gallery began representing the artist in 2021, and since then, Jungwirth has garnered an even greater international presence. A retrospective of the artist will open at the Guggenheim Bilbao in June 2024.

It was a delight to visit her in her studio, filled with canvasses, works on paper, brushes, and momentos. The artist spoke movingly of her approach to art, her career, and her legacy. Spending the morning with her was a truly special moment. Despite her age, Jungwirth remains a resolutely determined artist.
